What’s New?

Share with fellow dog lovers!

It’s the weekend! We’ve got a busy weekend planned here with some outdoor fun with our dogs and plenty of spring cleaning here, too. We’ve been doing some spring cleaning on the site, too, and wanted to give you a rundown of what’s new!

Our new calendar!

We’ve been adding dog-centric festivals to DogTipper for a long time but we’ve never had one place where you could find the festivals in calendar format. Now we do! Our new Calendar provides a month-by-month look at upcoming festivals as well as special pet observances. (Bloggers: if you’re looking for a WordPress plugin for calendars, we used the WP Events Calendar plugin.)

Facebook Comments to Our Posts

Hooray, we’ve added Facebook Comments to our posts now! Now readers can comment using their Facebook login if they like (the WordPress comments are still there). We used the FB comment widget from Facebook but have to admit it was tough to do…we spend almost an entire day neck deep in code (and trying hard not to mess up something else at the same time!) Our implementation (since we have about 4,000 posts)  involved adding the code to specific files; an easier way is to add the code to your individual posts. There’s a good post and video on that method here.

We’re on Whrrl!

We’ve been on Facebook and Twitter for a long time but now we’re on Whrrl, too! This week we joined the I Love My Dog Society and we’ve been making recommendations of our favorite dog places. We’ll be giving you many more details about our #ILoveMyDog recommendations in a future post but, for now, just wanted to let you know you can say hi to us on Whrrl, too!

Feeling like spring!

It’s really feeling like spring here and we’re hoping to plant some flowers this weekend. We generally try to find plants that are native to our area and ones that aren’t attractive to deer (or they’ll be eaten before they bloom!) but we also make sure that any plants and flowers we plant aren’t toxic to dogs. Here’s an excellent list (with links to photos) of flowers and plants to keep away from your pets…and be extra careful with any lawn treatments, fertilizers, cocoa mulch, and other items, too! (Here’s another list of all types of toxins…from foods to flowers from WebMD.)

Happy weekend!
