At-Home Enrichment

Simple activities that fit everyday life at home

Not every day allows for long walks, outings, or extra plans — and that’s okay!

At-home enrichment is about giving your dog mental engagement, choice, and curiosity using what you already have, right where you are. That can mean busy days, quiet days, rainy days, and everything in between. No special equipment. No pressure. Just simple ways to help dogs feel settled, interested, and content at home.

What “Enrichment at Home” Really Means

Enrichment isn’t about keeping dogs busy all the time.

It’s about giving them opportunities to think, explore and make choices.

At home, enrichment might look like:

  • Sniffing and searching
  • Solving simple puzzles
  • Learning a new trick
  • Licking, chewing, or exploring textures
  • Observing the world from a window
  • Participating in calm, shared routines

You don’t need to do it all — even one thoughtful activity can make a difference.

Simple At-Home Enrichment Ideas

You don’t need to rotate activities constantly. A few favorites used thoughtfully are enough. The key here is favorite activities. Remember: it’s only enriching if your dog thinks it’s enjoyable!

Try:

  • Scatter feeding or hiding a few treats. I do this both in the house and in the yard. We started this as an Easter egg hunt for our dogs, letting them sniff out treats hidden in the yard, and now they enjoy it year around!
  • Letting your dog sniff new household items. Barli just loves to sniff the grocery bags when I bring them in. (Take precautions here if you have chocolates or other foods toxic to dogs in the bag.) And he really loves it when I bring in clothing from the thrift store. Think how scents both from the store and from different homes he gets to explore…and it doesn’t cost an extra penny!
  • Serving a portion of your dog’s meal in a slow feeder or a food puzzle like a KONG.
  • Offering a puzzle toy. You can make a simple DIY enrichment toy or purchase one.
  • Creating a quiet observation spot
  • Adding variety to how meals are served

Think in terms of choice and curiosity, not entertainment.

A DogTipper Favorite: Enrichment Through Choice

One of the simplest forms of enrichment is letting dogs choose. Just think about it: we make many, many choices for our dogs every day: when they eat, what they eat, when we walk, when we go to bed.

Wouldn’t it be nice to give them the power of choice? Often called agency, this simple power of choice builds confidence and reduces stress — without adding work for you.

At home, that might mean:

  • Choosing where to rest. Consider multiple places throughout your home you might make a dog bed (or a human sofa) available to your dog so he has some options.
  • Selecting between two activities
  • Deciding when to engage or walk away

How At-Home Enrichment Fits With Daily Life

At-home enrichment pairs naturally with:

  • Short or enrichment-focused walks
  • Calm daily routines
  • Seasonal changes
  • Pet holidays and special days

You don’t need separate systems — everything can work together.
