With the Fourth of July falling on a weekend this year, celebrations will be even bigger than usual…and that means more fireworks and more noises to terrify pets.
Every year, we make plans to stay home and distract our dogs on the Fourth of July. Our dog Irie is especially frightened of the sound of fireworks (she’s the same with lightning) so we’re making sure we’re home, the television’s on (and hopefully drowning out the sound of any area fireworks), and we’re just hanging out and relaxing in the house with her when the fireworks begin.
The Fourth of July is a time when many dogs become frightened and bolt from their yards and homes, becoming lost and possibly injured. To keep your dog safe, you’ll want to start making plans NOW for next weekend.
If you’ll be headed out to Fourth of July celebrations, decide now on what your dog will be doing and where. Will you plan to leave your dog indoors while you’re out? Do you need to make plans to hire a pet sitter to come over and keep your dog happy and safe? Do you need to make overnight boarding arrangements for your dog if you’ll be especially late?
