Adopting a Shelter Dog

Every month is a great time to adopt a shelter dog but in October special attention is focused on the subject thanks to the American Humane Association’s Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and a growing number of efforts by other organizations and companies as well.
This year, shelters can use the public attention more than ever before. Difficult financial times have resulted in a decrease in donations to shelters, a decrease in adoptions, and an increase in the number of animals arriving at shelters. Unbelievably, 3.7 million healthy dogs and cats are euthanized every year because a home cannot be found for them.
What can you do to help?
- Consider adoption. Are you thinking about getting a pet in the coming months? The holidays are a big time for pet purchases, all too often from pet stores and flea markets (both often stocked with dogs that were born in unsanitary, inhumane, and disease-filled puppy mills). If you are thinking about getting a dog, visit your local shelters; they are filled with adoptable dogs just waiting for a home. If you’ve got your heart set on a specific breed, locate a breed-specific rescue group! Petfinder.com is a great resource you can search by breed. You can also search to find a list of shelters and rescues in your area.
- Encourage adoption. Are any of your friends, family members or co-workers considering getting a dog? Help spread the word that shelters have an incredible assortment of dogs of every size, age, and personality. Many people just don’t realize the variety of dogs available (for a very good price!) at shelters and rescues. Did you know about one in every five dogs in the shelter system is a purebred?
- Help a Shelter. Is there a way you can help your shelter? Could you help walk dogs? Photograph dogs? Help with their fundraising efforts? Or their website? Whatever your skills, you can bet they’re in demand.
- Donate. Donations are needed more than ever before–and they don’t have to be financial. Do you have old blankets and towels you’re considering tossing? Your shelter probably needs them. Give your local shelter a call (or check their website for a wish list)!
We can say from personal experience (a lot of personal experience) that shelter dogs can be a great addition to your family. Take your time looking, talk with shelter personnel about the dogs, and spend time with the dogs individually. It’s a big decision…and one that can be rewarding every single day!
