Happy Halloween from DogTipper

After going through the many exceptional photos entered in our dog Halloween costume contest–and attending several dog parades and costume contests in our area this month–we decided to try our hand at dog costuming here with our dogs, Tiki and Irie.

First, an explanation: Tiki and Irie are not accustomed to doggie couture. Although Irie has a very charming faux sheepskin coat, the dogs’ preferred wardrobe is nothing more than a collar (and sometimes that is a challenge.)

But, inspired by the numerous elaborate costumes we’ve seen, we decided to devote an afternoon to a little home Halloween photography using some thrift store purchases we picked up this week.

Things started off well, with Irie in her little pumpkin hat (above) and Tiki in a stylish purple hat:

We then moved on to more headgear. All was going well!

But then we started to get confident and advanced to garments. Irie posed in a colorful Halloween cape…but perhaps we missed the glint in Tiki’s eye that, in looking back, seemed to say, “I’ll help you get out that thing…”

Finally, we had one last costume remaining: a purple wispy skirt of ribbons and tulle. Irie had it on one minute…then the next minute the dogs were off and running…and the skirt was a tug of war toy…

Nonetheless, a good time was had by all (except maybe for that purple skirt…it didn’t survive the afternoon). We’ve gained a new respect for those costumed dogs and the patience of the dogs and those that dress them–and photograph them. And we’ve been reminded of the fun of playing dress up. Like so many aspects of life with dogs, these four-legged friends remind us of the simple fun in everyday activities.

Wishing a happy–and safe–Halloween to all!
