5*365: Look Them in the Eyes!

Share with fellow dog lovers!

Oh, the simple things are sometimes the biggest things. Like getting your dog to look AT the camera, as in directly at the camera, for a photo. It seems like such a small thing, and sometimes (like today) it is. Sometimes, not so much…

Getting your dog to look directly at the camera can make the difference between a photo that’s good and one that really tugs at your heart. When we publish our Adoptable Dog of the Day posts Monday through Friday, if the dog is looking straight into the camera, the dog *always* gets a bigger reaction than the dog that’s turned away from the camera. It has nothing to do with the general appearance of the dog, the story behind the dog, or anything other than those eyes.

The eyes that look out from that computer screen (or printed photo) are what makes us all fall in love with dogs in the first place and keep us coming back for more.

This photo was a quick snapshot in our front yard today. There’s too much sun on one side of Tiki’s face…but when you have a 70-degree day in early January you just want to get out and enjoy that sunshine 🙂 But an overexposed side or not, Tiki’s eyes make the photo.

To get your dog to look directly at the camera, don’t be afraid to make crazy sounds or have an assistant stand behind you and catch your dog’s attention. We’ll be talking about more ways to attract your dog’s attention in future 365 tips.

For today, though, just get out your camera and see if you can take a photo of your dog with your dog looking directly at the camera. It’s much easier with some dogs than others (Tiki loves to look at the camera but Irie usually turns away) but some tempting treats can always help.

And, as always, if you get a shot of your dog with today’s tip, please post it in the comments below and share the fun!
