113*365: Using a Flash Outdoors

I’ve talked before about turning your flash off indoors. The results are flat with a background that’s too dark and a foreground, usually your dog, that’s too light. And we won’t even talk about that crazy red eye an indoor flash produces…

But a flash outdoors can help your photos. If your subject, like Tiki above, is in the shade with sunlight in the background, a flash can illuminate your dog without giving the photo an artificial look. I just used the popup flash on my DSLR for the top shot.

Here’s the exact same shot taken at the same time from the same spot…but without a flash:

With a DSLR, you can shoot manually and accomplish the same thing, but turning on the flash is an easy way that any camera can get this effect and still shoot in automatic mode!
