A platinum-selling duo with hearts of gold, Dan + Shay have not only starred alongside rescue dogs in the music video for their chart-topping single “Nothin’ Like You,” now the country crooners– who are currently on the road with their respective Rovers on their Obsessed tour– are helping to shine a spotlight on companion animals who dream of taking center stage in the lives of loving pet parents.
Dan Smyers (a doting Dad to rescue dogs Chief and Joy from Nashville-based Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue) and Shay Mooney (Poppa to a dog named Pippa) are the latest in a long line of animal-loving luminaries to the praises of pet adoption in Petco’s ongoing series of Think Adoption First videos. Previous famous fans of Fidos and felines to step in front of the camera for the paws cause include 2014 Olympian (and hero to homeless Sochi dogs) Gus Kenworthy; actress Jamie Chung; two-time Tony Award winner and star of the TV Land series Younger, Sutton Foster; professional skateboarder and rallycross driver Bucky Lasek; Surfers Hall of Fame member Taylor Knox; major league baseball player Tyson Ross and roller derby champion Bonnie Thunders.

“I’ll never forget when my wife texted me a photo of a little white dog with spots, big ears and a nervous personality that she found at Petco’s adoption event,” stated Smyers, who shares snapshots of his canine companions’ with fans on the dogs’ very own Instagram account. “Nothing brings me more happiness than to see Chief and Joy wagging their tails, jumping on us and giving us kisses after a performance,” Mooney chimed in.
Dan Smyers (whose Instagram account profile reads “I sing songs + save dogs”) and his bride Abby made their 2017 wedding a family affair, with their fur babies Chief, Joy and Ghost (a former foster dog who was recently adopted by the couple), in attendance:
