End of an Era: A Laughing Horse Lodge Closes Permanently

Irie and Tiki (in their GPS collars) in front of the entrance sign, just a short walk from the beach.

We were SO sad to read this week on Facebook that A Laughing Horse Lodge in Port Aransas will not be rebuilding or renovating following extensive damage from Hurricane Harvey. It appears that the land will be sold, bringing an end to one of the most dog-friendly accommodations in Texas.

We’d been taking Irie and Tiki to Laughing Horse for the past five years, always planning both a spring and a fall visit.

They stayed there so many times that they knew when we drove into the parking lot where they were and immediately got excited!

We always stayed in the individual cottages; we started out in cottage #7, staying there three times before we moved on to #11 and 12…but Irie and Tiki NEVER forgot #7! Every time we walked the dogs around the property, they wanted to return to the back door of cottage #7 to “their” first beach house:

Our first cottage was located right beside the property’s self-serve dog wash!

As we got to know the property better, we moved to the larger cottages; our favorite was one that was easy to spot with its huge tree:

It was dog-friendly and comfortable…and Irie and Tiki raced inside every time we opened the door…

As rebuilding efforts continue, we know that we’ll be back to Port Aransas once again…but it sure won’t be the same without A Laughing Horse Lodge!

It’s so sad…it’s going to be a long, long road for so many destinations to get back to where they were before Harvey hit.

The city counsel fixed it so that they could not rebuild. It’s terribly sad.

It’s so sad. That place was our home away from home. We could ask the dogs “want to go to your beach house?” and they’d get so excited. They knew the minute we pulled in the parking lot where we were!

I’m truly sorry, my whole family was looking forward to staying there again, you were our family beach tradition. 🙁

I so miss the Laughing Horse in Port A. Always comfortable, convenient, cozy…the folks were helpful. It’s just a shame..I never stayed anywhere else when I went to Port A. Will miss the colorful lodges and all the great times.

Do any of you folks have a recommendation of another place in Port Aransas that we could stay ? My husband and I used to go there with our German Shepherd Dogs every spring and fall for 8 years … loved Sandy and Lloyd when they were the managers … it was always so much fun … but since Harvey wiped it out we have not been there .. We miss it so very much … I heard a rumor from some folks I met in a neighborhood park in Austin, TX that the city council in Port A had a policy put in place that would not allow people to live on their property in a trailer while they rebuilt their homes … hard to believe that is true ??? Sure sounds that way …
